i have a 72 Triumph Daytona I have been thinking about turning into a racer. I have been looking at different oil set ups and have come up with two that seem to be the best.

1. Leaving on the stock oil tank, converting to a new pump (Morgo, I also hear just slapping on a bonny650 one works well), and mounting the radiator off the rear fender. Then mounting the oil cooler and twist off filter where the tool box (right side cover) is located. I don't know if the radiator would have problems getting junk thrown onto it from the rear wheel. It also seems like there would be a lot of hose running from radiator and all. I'd still need to get the seat off to fill oil. Plus is that I wouldn't have to fabricate a new oil tank.

2. I saw a website where the guy put the oil tank inside the gas tank. Was thinking of doing something similar; mounting both up top but keeping them separate. Then mounting the radiator where the oil tank used to be. The oil cooler and filter would be in the same place, and I'd have a new pump too. I sent the guy who did the other tanks an email asking him about the heat from the oil and have not heard back. plus is that I could get to each component on the bike separately.

I am new to all of this so if these are completely horrible ideas let me know.

Well what kind of racer (roadracer - dirtracer) are you going to build? Then we can determine what kind of junk is going to be thrown. Also they are all good ideas and most of them have been done so they can't be to bad. Tony knows the most about 500 Triumph racers on this board but I think his keyboard only has like 6 letters. Hes a peeping forum tom so he might not jump in until I screw up or something. Anyway, there are all kinds of resources for Triumphs on this board just let us know what you need.

do you need any connections in fla?? i can ask around some of the guys here and see if they know anyone. trying to do it alone can be really tough. i was asking so that maybe we could find someone to hook you up with. if i was you though, id keep the radiator out of the way of anything that could sling debris into it. theres no better way to end your day of racing than barfing oil out of your bike all over the track and not knowing it. then to have bikes pile up behind you. i know i have seen those oil tanks get really really hot. mine never has though. i stopped on the mass turnpike to see if a guy needed help with his bike one afternoon. (im a sucker for a broke down british bike) and the oil in his tank was actually boiling. it was so hot, we could barely get the top back on. so maybe that and gas not a good thing. as long as you have an easy way of accessing it all, it sounds like a cool idea.

i'll keep you posted if i find anyone.

I've been in touch with lots of people; Countryside Cycle in Tallahasee, Steve Wiley, Wes Scott (not sure if any of these are familiar). I am a mechanical engineering student at UF and have run into a small group of some older guys who used to race these bikes when they were current. I just want to bounce some ideas around, I was told there is nothing worse than building a bike you are not happy with. Currently I am looking for an oil cooler(s) to play with. and wanted to put on a changeable oil filter, mounted in front of where the swing arm attaches to the frame. I could use any diagrams or names of recommended books for this.
I went to some vintage races in October in Jennings, FL and saw some bikes there with this set up. I have been looking around on ebay and online and thought about just going to a scrap yard to see if there are any promising parts for cheap; so that I can start piecing things together and getting an idea of what i really need/want.
