I need another project like I need a <fill in blank>...

Looking for ideas on single cylinder GP bike. I was thinking a 350cc single cylinder 2-stroke, 1968 or older. I have a Yamaha R5 frame I can put it in. Mike Elliot is thinking of doing the same thing, but with a RT-1 which was first make in 1971, making it a Period 2 bike.

Curious what was made then, as I'd like to have a GP bike. With the above restrictions, it'd be legal in AHRMA 350GP and maybe WERA 350GP (500GP for sure).

Would prefer Yamaha since I have a garage full of Yami-crap already.
Or maybe I should talk to Gaylord about his Ossa....

Wonder if Yamaha or anyone else puts out a model identification guide like Honda does?
I refer to my Honda book daily, huge asset when it comes to figuring out what qualifies for what, when, how big etc.

When was the first of the "DT" series Yamaha dirt bikes? They made a lot of them I know that.

Don't know what the Japanese were making in big two stroke singles back then. I think you're on the right track with the european brands, Maico, CZ, Husky, as well as the big three Spanish brands.
Sounds like a fun project, long as you're doing it for yourself...

JB, sorry 'bout your project. Maybe you can just lease it to the guy to race, and if he doesn't like it you keep it. I know of several auto race shops that do that...

I've toyed with the idea from both sides... I needed a 250 for my son to race in flattrack, but didn't have the cash to buy one. I knew a guy that had one, his kid was a couple years away from being able to ride it. It could've/would've worked out, but I ran out of funds.
I've considered letting someone use one of my bikes on the same basis, since I can't seem to get to the races as much as I'd like...
It's all doable with the right people involved.

$900 for a non-running bike. They're on crack. But would make a neat Lightweight Supervintage bike.
