Yeah this one is a bit noobish, but I really need to know.

Which head gasket is the base, and which is the top; the one with the metal around the cylinders or the thinner one.

The one with the metal is the head gasket, the other one is the base gasket.

There isn't much pressure on the cylinder - cases joint, so no need for a fancy gasket there. There's a ton of pressure on the head - cylinder joint, so the metal gasket goes there.
