I shipped a motor from alabama to NY and it cost me $300, but I don't recommend the company since they lost the motor for 2 weeks.

I have heard forward air is cheaper, my buddy shipped a bike from Az through them and it was like $350.

first make a wood crate for it (just 2x4's drywall screwed together so it doesn't rock), drain oil for shipping (saves weight and is safer), weigh it and measure it, then call yellow and two other frieght companies. tell them what you have and quote them all yellow's price. then call yellow with the lowest quote and see if they want to beat it, etc (you may have these shippers email/fax you the rate), and if you need to share it with yellow, roadway, overnite you can email/fax it yourself.

also you could just call a broker like LGI, but who knows if your getting the best rate. i normally don't care cause my customers pay for shipping and are SUPPOSED to make all arrangements. i used LGI to get DHL to ship a r/t ducati 450 single frame to italy for my customer. it was $380ish, but ups wanted $500+ and usps wouldn't touch it (size & weight).

i'd ship it for you, but my truck is still at the bottom of the ice highway!

cheers,

texy

I put a cb350 motor in a Rubbermaid tub. Styrofoam around all sides of the engine. Used DHL. Shipped from upstate NY to Chicago for about $50. Seemed to work fine for me. I also have used Tex's crate method but that was quite a bit more expensive.

there you go! $50/shipping, $10 tub, $10 styrofoam, $1 duct tape...

$71 bucks = easy peasy!

tex

p.s.- thanks for the tip craig!

It was even better than that Tex. I had left over styrofoam insulation so that was "free". And I took the tub to the DHL place and the nice lady taped it up for me. So $10 for the tub. You can't get cheaper than that unless you use a rendering truck going to Alaska.

ps. I learned this from Karl Smolenski. I can't take the credit.
