Looks like we'll be heading down through Daniel Boone National Forest to camp 2 Thursdays from now after work, explore a bit Fri AM in the Red River Gorge area, then head toward Asheville NC and end up at Maggie Valley Sunday-ish (wife has to be there for work Tuesday).



The area is chocked full of the kind of incredible scenery and twisty roads that I love, almost too many to choose! I was hoping some of you could help me narrow down the really critical ones that would be the most to my likings based on your experiencences.



Incredible mountain/cliff/waterfall scenery is tops for me, as well as lots of tight curves with some excellent elevation changes thrown in there. Nicely banked curves and great pavement are a plus, but also the less engineered twisty backroads have a different but equal allure for me. A small amount of straight-ish sweeper roads or 35mph roads can be thrown in as well if they lead to incredible views or link to other amazing twisty bits (the BRP near Maggie is the best section according to the tourism vid)

I know the dragon is near there, which I may crack and ride, but I'm really trying to find the "better" roads nearby and avoid it's congestion, commercialization, and low speed limit+LEO presence. Not sure how far away 421 "The Snake" is, but a vid I watched of 2 guys riding that made it seem to be quite the "must-ride."

Ride to Caesars Head state park, in South Carolina.
It's only about an hour ride from Asheville and gorgeous, super curvy, lots of elevation change.
Lots of waterfalls and trails worth hiking, almost no traffic, and wonderful pavement that will let you run as hard as you trust your rubber to go.

I'll be heading there sometime this summer to camp for a couple of days.
I got lost on the road there while driving a VERY heavily loaded 18 wheeler and thought I was going to die.
Ended up passing the entrance to the park before I made it to a real highway again and got to my destination.
Didn't see a single cop, and only 2 other cars over 3 hours I was lost.

The Blue Ridge Parkway is nearby, but due to the low speed limit, it's more of a leisurely road. Very scenic, though.

I did the blue ridge parkway in a car a couple of years ago when I was in asheville for a wedding. I did it early in the morning and it was foggy and wonderful and still pretty scenic. I didn't even mind the speed limits (there are tons of cops on there).

If you're in Maggie Valley be sure and stop by Dale Walkers Wheels Through Time motorcycle museum. Awesome collection of vintage bikes. You may have seen his show "What's in the Barn"

I did the blue ridge parkway in a car a couple of years ago when I was in asheville for a wedding. I did it early in the morning and it was foggy and wonderful and still pretty scenic. I didn't even mind the speed limits (there are tons of cops on there).

Weird when I was on the Parkway I think I only say park rangers just a few times in the whole length. I was warned that tickets were steep being Federal Fines.

Think I'm going to print this out and go have some alone time. Been kinda avoiding heading south cuz the border hassles can make it a bit of an anxiety trip, more of a "fuck off than a welcome to" experience far too often. But roads like that, when they ask business or pleasure I'll show'm the map and say "all business" Then they'll impound my bike or turn me around. woho good times.

Hwy 421 "The Snake" is also quite good. 33 Miles, 489 curves, 3 Mountains and a Valley.
