I just replaced the seals on my front forks and I had to pound them out of the triple tree.

The top tubes are caked with rust. I tried using a wire wheel brush but it did nothing. Is there a secret to removing the rust?

If I can't get it off, how should I go about pounding the forks back in?

Thanks,
Mut

I've had good luck with Du Pont Metal Conditioner 5717S. It's an acid that eats the rust. If you wet the surface with this stuff and go after it with a scotch brite pad, and then hit it again with the wire brush it does a pretty good job. It's an industrial product, so you may have to be creative in your acquisition of it.

I think that's the stuff I use...I forget, got a gallon of it. Have to soak the parts for a while, but it does some impressive stuff.

Don't work for crap in cold temps.... I focus a work light on it and it works pretty quick....like six hours or so. Great for delicate intricate parts too, doesn't touch ANYTHING but the rust.
