Setting the timing?

I recently put in my new Boyer Brandson electronic ignition with no problems.When I fired up the timing light, instead of getting the "F" mark I'm getting the "1/4" mark, which is just to the right of the "F" mark.When I turn the plate at idle to adjust the timing , the timing advancer moves with the plate so I cannot adjust to the "F" mark. What I do wrong?

Are you setting advance/points at something like 3000 rpm with the timing light? you should not be stting it at idle. You have to get past the advance stage to set it.

Name the bike/engine too.
