Steering Stem Races

Okay, in preparation for the tappered bearings I am getting from Proflo sometime in the next year or so. It has been 3 weeks since I ordered them. I am trying to extract the races from the old bearings and it appears to be a real bitch. They are snug in the steering stem and I don't want to damage the stem by wacking the krap out of the races.

I built a crude bearing press with some thread rod, nuts and a steel plate...but can't figure out a crude extractor. Any suggestions?

To get to point B from point A is much more fun if you go via points C thru Z!

You won't damage the neck by punching the races out. It's the only way I've ever been able to remove them. You do want to be a little careful as they come out not to gouge the neck with the punch, but even if you do it shouldn't affect the new race. Be prepared to use some force, they don't come out with gentle taps...
BTW, you probably don't need to "press" the new race in either, just tap it in place using the old race to protect the new one.
