The Great Gig in the Sky Thread

With so many of the greatest musicians recently passing, I thought I'd start a common thread and get all the good memories in one place.

RIP Maurice White, founder of Earth, Wind and Fire.
This sound really makes me pine for the good old days of realistic expectations and minimal responsibility.

Just surviving the rock and roll lifestyle for that long qualifies you as being the greatest band in the world. Not sure they are for me but definitely top ten.
10 years being rock 'n roll animals, 48 being touring multi millionaires.

Sorry, FAKE NEWS. A buddy just told me he died in July 28th, 2021. I read it in an article yesterday, which claimed it was news, so I assumed it had been in the last couple days.
I usually pay more attention to the source but you don't really think about needing to confirm a musicians death.

My friends note said " I must have missed the resurrection, he died the first time months ago".

Yeah. Loved him as Eddie in Rocky Horror and his Bat Out of Hell album is excellent.

I flogged that one.

Read an article recently where he was interviewed a few years ago - he was losing it mentally then, apparently.

But still. Great voice. Big loss.
Agreed. Big loss. I was never a Meatloaf fan but he was a great musician and Bat Out of Hell was an important album. Rest In Peace Good Sir.

He was the founder of The Ventures - but not the RnR Hall of Fame.

I have always wondered if Surf Rock should be categorised as RnR.

I really like The Ventures, Beach Boys, Jan and Dean and the Surfaries.

I think that Surf Rock is it's own genre.

Surf Rock is a genre unto itself and The Ventures were a big part of it. Definitely RnR. Huge Beach Boys fan too. Surf Rock was very influential on what became Classic Rock, some of our roots are there.

Rest In Peace Don.
Taylor Hawkins drummer for the Foo Fighters, 50. Texas boy but played with Canadian Alanis Morissette's band before the Foo Fighters, in the early '90's.
Yeah, huge loss. I can't imagine where Dave Grohls head is at the moment. First Curt Cobain and now this.
Alan White, drummer for Yes for 100 years. Had to be 150 because he was in bands before Keith Richards was born.

72 years. I would have put him in his 80's at least. Drummed for Lennon as well.
