Hello all.

I'm an engineering student, new to Chicago, IL. I had a license and Kawasaki Ninja back home in California. Rode for about a year before my speeding tickets caught up to me. It's been about 5 years since then, I've worked out my legal issues and am eager to get back on a bike this summer. I've been attracted to cafe racers for a couple years now, doing some homework and am ready to try my first build. I know absolutely nothing, but I'm open any and all suggestions.

Right now I am looking to find a local garage or shop I can meet some fellow enthusiasts.

I am also interested in any suggestions for a beginner bike. I've been checking out craigstlist and am interested in Yamaha xs750's and BMW R100s, although the latter seems a bit pricey.

don't waste your time with the xs750.

You can always buy a BMW R80 and put the R100 top end on it later on. BMWs are like tinker toys like that.

buy a running bike. Ride it. The bike will tell you how it needs to be modded.

I don't think this kind of motorcycle will help you with your speeding problem. These are just slower sport bikes. sounds like the problem is in you and you lack of personal responsibility or impulse control. Don't worry we all suffer from it (and mostly enjoy it).

I don't often disagree with Geeto, but I think the XS750 is a half decent bike.
I have had 3 up to now, and had my doubts at first, they are big and heavy, but I like them.

you also have a shop and skills and have been doing this a while. The xs750 has no real aftermarket here in the states so for a noob its an uphill battle. Airhead beemers however have a pretty decent aftermarket of bolt on parts.

You're right about the availability of airhead spares. There is a few companies in the UK who stock a huge range of new parts, I guess it's the same in the US.
