whats up guys, just got the lights and everything off the front of my GS750, now that I can see the vin number I wanted to look it up, since I didn't get a tittle with the bike. But when I look at it its only 5 numbers long, and from my understanding all vin numbers where 17 characters long. Am I missing something here?

I ran into that on my 72 GT550, the VIN is something like GT550-12345. Have a buddy who's a cop, asked him to run it before I sent the paperwork to the DOT just in case. He couldn't run the VIN. I got a title, it wasn't a problem.

Dug out the title for my 75, it's the same way. Titled that one too. Guess I didn't notice it at the time.

I think the 17 digit vin started sometime in the late '70s or maybe 1980. My '76 Bonneville only has 7 digits on the steering head, turns out the full vin starts with T140- ********, so like Ratty said, prolly start with the model designation, then add the numbers on the frame.
