CANON!!! without a doubt the best in digital cameras for amateur photogaphers (that is people who dont' get paid to take pics). I have an old one the a510 but anything newer than that (the numbers go up) would be better. good luck!

Canon all the way. I have 2. A 2 megapixel "A 210" or something or other and a 5 megapixel S2IS. The thing I like about them is that they work. I beat the hell out of that A210 and it never failed to take a picture. I jumped up to the S2IS only because I had the money and wanted something I could zoom in with more (12X zoom). I also have a couple of Canon film cameras. Very solid.

I just did some extensive digital camera shopping (as a christmas gift), and I settled on the Canon SD-630. I wanted one that was small and pretty capable. My roomate has an A-series (A510 i think) and it's more powerful but a little bigger. It sort of depends what you want, but I would say either the Canon SD-600 or the A630 (newer version of my roomate's). I would definitely shop around, because different cameras/companies will offer different options.
For example; Olympus makes a waterproof/shockproof one, if you really want it to be able to take a beating.

we got the olympus for kirstens parents a while back. since they are always on the boat. i know they had to take it back because it broke not long after they had it. it has big buttons too. the canons seem to have smaller buttons. maybe cuz they make the smallest camera.
