M-F'er clipped my front wheel, making a right turn from the center lane! Lucky I am a dirty skateboarder and had some crash reflexes. I got off quick. The bike went under the wheel and the funny part is I was just getting back from a 300 mile ride. Most accidents happen close to home right? Well, I am fine. The bike did pretty well, needs some work. We'll see....

NYers- Those backcountry catskills roads are F'ing bonkers! More hairpins than you can imagine dropping gears into.

Rosko,
What bike and how much damage? Sounds like it might be time for some MF to pay for a front suspension upgrade. E-gay could be your very good friend on this one. I say stick it to the cager and get some good stuff out of this one.
Glad you are ok.

unless youve had it appraised and insured for that value, chances are youll get blue book. in other words, shit. we went through this with our bug, they had to appraise it to insure it for enough to get it replaced if some fucker wrecked it. otherwise it was worth like 300 bucks.

motorcycle accidents happen close to home becasue most people ride only close to home. and youre head isnt into it yet. the msf course covers that i guess. something to keep in mind when you hear that dumb statistic thrown out there.

ive found if you own an old bike, your best bet is to know how to fix everything on it yourself. (not that i think you dont know seth, im sure you do) becasue if you leave it with someone, chances are they'll take a month, it'll cost a g, and itll be more fucked up than if you were experimenting with it. unfortunately, to get the cash, you have to have the shop. but for that matter, take it to the newest place that has the nicest sportbikes you can find. and make them give you an estimate. chances are you can buy a new bike!!

One of my buddies had a pretty violent crash this weekend. 3 of us were out for a spin (my 83 seca, an '05 R6 and a slightly chopped and highly modified 89 heritage softail).
My buddy on the harley hit some gravel and went off a 5 ft embankment into a ditch... About 2 feet from a giant rock.

Thanks y'all. It's fine, everything that got trashed was stuff I junked off the 450 race project! So I have extras. The guy who hit me admits its his fault, I have photos and even video(! supposedly the gas station has a camera) so I'd like to be re-imbursed for parts and labor. Even if I am providing both! Shit, I lost a day of work today for lack of transport. I have to take a F'ING BUS tomorrow! The bike runs, and so far everything thats bent/ broken is controls/ lights. We'll see. Thanks for the info Joe, when this goes back together I'll find an appraisal. K1's are getting hard to find. And dammit, I like riding it on the street!

and, Tanner, you know I'll happily take ANY 450s i can get!!!
BTW, which shut deck you want?

Getting an estimate for 'repair' is a joke here, all the good japanese mechanics aren't 'registered repair shops'
Holy Shit Seth....Glad to hear you are ok. I'll call you later to get the full details. As for shop, take the bike to Mitch at Alternative Cycle. Good Mechanic with lots of old honda expirence, NYS registered shop, and he does insurance work on wrecked bikes. He is expensive if you have to go out of pocket but anything you are missing he will probably have on hand. Just let him know you don't want the bike totaled.

Insurance companies use the NADA value most of the time these days, since it is compiled by dealers. NADA lists the value of your bike as between $1400 and $2125 for a 69 K1 and $1300 to $1800 for a K2. If I recall correctly your bike is actually a 1971 with 1969 bodywork (at least it is registered as a 1971) wich still puts the value at $1300-$1800. Now if I had to take a guess I would say your bike is probably worth $2500 here in NYC. That means that the repairs have to be less than $1800 for the insurance company to not total the bike (75% of the total value of the bike).

You are going to have to negotiate with the ins company on the value of your bike. I think the NADA value is unfair because it is made up of last years prices and classic hondas have spiked in price this year. The way you get the ins company to give you a higher price on a vehicle is to show them concrete examples of where the bike sold for more. This is where the finished auction seach feature comes in real handy. Also show them auctions with "Buy it Now"s since this reflects a concrete asking price. Look on the web for classic bike dealer sites and see what they are asking for comparable bikes and that usually is the clincher. Don't try to make money off this, get a fair estimate of the damage because the less it is the more the ins company will want to help you repair and not total it out (keep in mind that they are going into this with the mindset that they want to just total it and buy you off).
