Me and my son picked this up off CL for $300. We plan on restoring it to its full glory and use it as a pit bike/rv bike/7-11 run bike/just dorking out bike. I always purchase a vehicle with proper title, registration, non-op, etc. we live in California and you can really hump yourself on registration fees if not careful. I read on this forum a lot of folks purchasing real big non running projects....semi complete....with a bill of sale. That is definately not ideal...... especially not to someone new. This runs surprisingly well and is from what I can tell...complete. Riding off road gave me that "I just got my first new motorcycle feel." Remember our first and some our first bikes? Memory lane.
There is a lot of potential dirt upgrades you could do to that bike if you wanted to make it a more full on dirt bike you know :) jus sayin.

It's been my observation that old bike owners come in one of three types; those who want to Ride the old bike, those who want to Sell the old bike and turn a profit, and those who think they want to Collect old bikes just to look at them.

:I fall under the Ride the old bike category, so a tiny 1970's enduro would never be worth 3 or 4 grand to me.
IF I was inclined to collect bikes, the bike would need to be unused and still in the original shipping crate for it to be worth 3 or 4 grand, which equates to roughly 7 times it's original sticker cost.
The problem with assuming there is a big $ nostalgia market for old restored bikes is: anyone old enough to want that old bone purely for nostalgia reasons, probably remembers what they sold for new.

If you are going to turn an old bike into a dirt squirt, the first thing to do is to remove all those OEM parts like the still perfect instrument cluster and headlight shell, which actually might be worth big $ some day, once you actually locate that illusive guy who collects over-priced 1970's dirt bikes and hangs them on the wall in his museum.

And now for the big question of the day ?:I Why would anyone in their right mind want to put a pillion seat and passenger pegs on a sub 100cc motorcycle?
Unless you are stuck at the size of a 10 year old boy and frequently offer rides to small children ?:I

down with pillion on everything

example:

… passenger is sitting totally behind the rear axle, common sense tells you what that will do for stability and increasing the chance of that pretty young thing getting all scared up. Need I say more ?:I

Now can we talk about how you would prep a bike like that for dirt action, and cash in on the actual collectable bits ?:I

2 ways to proceed:
1 make it a dirt bike real fast and use it.
2 make it street legal and mint which will take like forever :/ as the hyper clear photos reveal extensive work and bits needed to make this one mint.

The right shaped Aluminum shovel can make an awesome bash plate for these,
and the foot pegs, which are trashed on this one, are attached to a bracket that weighs a ton and is fitted with bad pegs to start with.
Levers are missing ball ends, that's illegal for certification if it's being correctly scrutinized, … you can't even run levers like that in any competition.

The chain adjusters are a weak point, if your rear axle is not tight enough, they will not be strong enough to hold the axle in place, they'll snap and need to be re-welded. Keep the axle tight.
… tires look like stock original :/ put full knobbies on it or it will be useless in dirt as well as useless on the road.

front forks need to come completely apart and be made nice again, steering head bearing will consist of a hand full of loose rusty balls.

… when you are cleaning up the brake shoes, because replacement will be uber difficult. You can improve their performance with some careful fitting & modifications :I
swing-arm bushing will be trash and the wheel bearings are so cheap and easy to source, you should just replace them.

Or the 3rd way

3) make it a dirt bike, make it street legal and make it as mint as I can with I want to do and spend. Remember this will be used for store runs, my rv bike and for off road. Off road for this would be used primarily on my private land just for fun as we have other toys strictly for off road. Also to relive youth. I understand it's capabilities.

You might be correct with the time frame for completion as I am somewhat off and on but when I am on and with my son's help...........it wouldn't be long.
I started at age 10. I can relate to what he would have the most fun doing :) trust me, he won't like the time frame and you won't want him hurting it. Plus it's a lousy street bike :| My first bike on the road was a Suzuki TC90 … on my 16th. birthday :) I quickly upgraded to a TS185 and that was Minimal for street imho, and I'm a tiny guy.

… I had to learn them on my own, he's a lucky kid :I is a great project either way

This is exactly what mine looked like except I laced it with a taller front rim :)
was an awesome bike until it swallowed the rotary valve.
… I might still have the rack somewhere ;)

If you're going for an original restore you can save a whole bunch of coin, there was no powder coat on them and there was precious little paint :|

Recommend putting your money into things like nice levers and bars if the old steel ones are bent in the least.

… do you still think this thing can be worth 3 or 4 grand when it's done, because that Beta cost 4 grand new, so you've got some pretty heavy competition there :|

& Please Don't say the tires look like they have plenty of tread on them so might not need replacing.

Have you priced the inspection certification license and insurance costs yet ?:I
We have to pay the sales taxes when you obtain the plate, not sure how that works for you. … you might not want to make it too nice before they see it ;)

… bet you could make it into one heck of a sweet Dirt bike for only the cost of your annual insurance, plates and the initial vehicle certification requirements.

BTW now you have the swingarm off, now is a good time to test your shocks, you'll have to remove the springs to see if the shocks have any shock left.

… swingarm bushings are better made or bought in Brass instead of plastic like the original ones.

Actually the tires have plenty of tread left on them but so many cracks that if I inflated them they might explode. Plus I have 2 new tires and a top end piston kit that the PO included in the sale. Your correct about the paint as I trial removed some with stripper and it released fairly well......WAY better than if it was powder coated.

I just did a cursory glance at prices for replacement items and found those rinky dink little items command the most money.......like the air filter, ignition switch, fork dust boots, etc. Those 3 probably costing right at around $250.
OMG don't pay that kind of money for cheap old parts !
