Looking for tires for my 160 racer. Searched the forum pretty thoroughly but I still need some advice.

I know, Avon or Dunlop. Hell, not too many choices among the good brands in 18" anyhow. What I don't know is, which model?

I'm not looking for anything exotic, just good enough for an amateur puke not to put it in the weeds on his first lap around a track.

Looks like there are two types of Roadrunner: the Universals and the Sport Tourers. I like the vintage look of the universals, but I suspect they aren't the best for racing. Super Venoms? I ran those on my street bike for a while and they were great but I got a feeling they might be a little fat for my application.

I've also run Dunlop K591's on the street and liked them fine, but they're discontinued.

Its a tiny bike so I don't want (probably can't fit) some fat, modern 130 (or even 120) in the back anyway.

Finally, this is going to sound stupid, but do the more common models come in a race compound version or do I just run the sport/street variety commonly available at my friendly neighborhood cycle parts superstore?

krap,

i would assume that even with a cb175 you will have a 90/90-18 up front and a 110/80-18 rear. i use the roadrunners in the am-20 and am-22 designations, front to back. worked for me for years! dunlops are lighter, but not necessarily better. avons are much easier to get (buy) than dunlops.

my 2 cents.....good luck!

the dunlops are only imported into north america from 2 sources. 99% of shops you go to will probably have no idea what youre talking about. phil lamont at vintage tyre in canada, and bob barker in florida both have them, or can get them.

The hot ticket out here in the West for the last couple years has been the Bridgestone BT39-SS Battle Ax. They were originaly developed for the Honda Dream 50R and NSR 50R racebikes. They have a low carcase weight, are available in a racing compound and are CHEAP! You can order them through any Honda dealer and retail cost is around $60 each.

Time for a rookie question in an old thread:
Bikebandit lists a couple different options that LOOK similar. An AM20 Roadrunner that's street legal, and a RACE tire that looks the same but isn't labeled as a Roadrunner AM20. (USCRA FCB rules don't seem to mention tires??) So, can somebody verify which I want? I think it'd be the "Race Tire"

Thanks.
