Now that I've spent a little money improving the suspension on my KLR, I really like it. I have done 600 mile days at 80 mph, and still felt like checking out the single track when I got there. I can carry a month's worth of gear, tools, and food, and parts are cheap and easy to find.
It's not the fastest thing out there, but I can accelerate better than just about anything else in traffic, and with the 16 tooth sprocket it's happy to cruise at 85mph all day long. It doesn't vibe much at all for a single, and has enough power to do wheelies if you know how to wheelie a heavy, underpowered bike.
I've changed the exhaust and modified the airbox and carb, and I'd be quite happy even if this was the only bike I own for the rest of my life.
The stock suspension didn't like the aftermath of being airborne with a fat rider and his gear, but that's easily overcome.
As much as I would have loved to have a bunch of other dual sport bikes, the price point, long fuel range and gear carrying capacity are what sold me on the KLR. Not to mention it looks awesome in its radioactive monkey snot livery.

My buddy and I just finished street legalizing his dr350 for a trip to Colorado this summer. I won't have time to ride the TAT like I've been dreaming of, so we'll put the bikes in my pickup until we hit Grand Junction, park the truck, and explore on bikes for a week, and then load up in the truck and come back home. Should be pretty cool.
FWIW, if someone offered to trade me a 250-400 cc dual sport with fuel injection and better suspension, and a 6 speed transmission, it might not be hard to convince me.
So far the klr has been one of my favorite bikes ever, and is definitely my favorite one I currently own. I don't see myself giving it up for anything less capable and versatile, or just selling it. It's here to stay, although after being my daily mount since August, it needs some TLC, namely a good cleaning and a repaint of the exhaust system.
