besides, some guy will just steal your bike that you don't even have a steering lock for, just so they can put the hot forks on their unfinished CB550 project
Ok guys it is a custom bike and inverted forks are what I like to look at so why wouldn't I? lol Besides they look badass.... here's a pick before I get started on her. Only 13k miles.
Doesn't someone make a cafe look kit for this bike yet? Seems to be a prime choice for the cafe look.
What's interesting to me are the single shock conversions. Just from seat of the pants engineering perspective that looks like a bad idea transmitting all the extra force through the swing-arm "what was intended to go through the shocks into the seat section to the main frame.".
Okay, say you wear 38/30 jeans, but but every store in the world has them priced at 2000.00. But you can buy 32/34s for 20 bucks...Would you?
I'm going to wear the 32/34's because I'm 6'1 ... 180 lbs. But I'll definitely customize the bike to my liking.
Forks are perfect with all accessories intact.
Be that as it may, I entered this site with a CX500 "project". Once I realized that I took a very ridable, though quirky bike and turned it into a ridiculously expensive to make right (and I'm not talking about monoshock and USD. That's just an absurdity on a chassis that was never designed for it. If you have to have that with a CX drivetrain, start with a GL or Euro spec CX. both have a better chassis for what you THINK a cafe racer is) project...I bought another bike that I wouldn't need to do endless and somewhat pointless work to.
Ok I'm not sure of the confusion.... if the bike is left as is how does it become a cafe race or a tracker. True it looks fine the way ot is if you're looking for a stock looking bike instead of something unique to your style.
I was looking for input on tech help.... Not someone's jackass opinion on the look of a cafe racer...
Tbanks guys
Its your bike do what you want with it. It's a CX500 and nobody here cares if it end up in a dumpster. Just don't do anything goofy that will make it unsafe. There are very few "turn a CX500 into a Cafe Racer" fans on this site. You may be better off over at the CX500 forum..... just sashay up to the KoolAid stand and your golden. You could stay here and ignore the flack. Folks will certainly point out the pitfalls. You could do a search on the one here. It was decent and you could get a few ideas. Even shows you how to put lipstick on the tires. Speaking from experience, the best way to turn a CX into a Cafe Racer, is to unscrew the tail light bulb and screw a Moto Guzzi V11 Sport onto it. If you do things right, you can survive here and it might actually be a good thing. You might enjoy it in spite off all of the pricks.
BTW, I'm one of the bigger pricks here (always second to Jag though), but I'm feeling benevolent today for some unknown reason.
There's a "form follows function" mentality here. Fashion bikes don't really strike a chord; the mentality is making safe, smart, performance improvements to bikes.
I wanna say thanks to all you guys for the input, even the ones with asshole negative input... I do appreciate it, make me think more carefully.
I'm not gonna do anything to make her unsafe, I just like to tinker and make things unique to myself and I like the style of the cx500. To be honest I've never had anything smaller than a liter bike.
It's doubtful this thing will ever have a monoshock as I'm oldschool and prefer the dual shock street tracker look, like I said I have two Ohlins shocks for the rear.
Oh Yea, I'm one of those guys back east. For what that bike is and was meant to do you can't really fault it. I don't know what they go for but anyone looking for a commuter could do way worse. But most likely a guy with an angle grinder sparkle in his eye and pipe wrap in his pocket will be knockin on your door shortly. If I wasn't so far away I'd conciser it for my missuz.
You are right. I fellow I knew put 100K+ on his touring all over N.A. Plus to be fair, I know it would handle better and probably go a little faster if I gave it a bit of maintenance. Too bad you aren't closer, I'd give you a smoking deal, just so I don't have to deal with those angle grinder folks. It's not as nice as it looks in that photo though. There are still times that I think I should do something weird with it, but I have way more shit on my plate than I have time for already.
Somebody, I think it was Geeto commented on a post a while back about a CX someone was about to fuck. The idea was a post apocalyptic courier type iron horse kinda deal. You know pieces of shopping cart welded on for guards and a lil steam punky in my minds eye anyway. Ever since I've wanted to find a candidate even an older enduro would be ideal. You could do that and still keep complete form over function. Actually it would be all about function and the less you gave a shit about form the better it would look. Not this but kinda the same use what ya got thinking.
I rode a CX500 for about 3 years while I was in college and after. I couldn't quite break 110 or so in it. That being said, the 5 gallon tank and reliability made it a fantastic commuter. I wish I could go back and customize it with the knowledge I have today
Yes something along those lines and I'd like to spend a month of Sundays adding a Coffman starter, just to scare children and little old ladies. Not sure it would speed up my border crossings.... might lose my Nexus card.
If you want to fit GSXR forks just do it..... there is a conversion chart online somewhere for the OD and ID needed to convert the bearings on all bikes.
