So I'm just scrolling, looking at pictures, then I'm like WTF? those are HEI modules. Had to read the entire saga.....

Right on Mike, fine job. You'll figure out quickly which ones of these fuckers can't fabricate their way out of a wet paper sack.

Suzukis are great for interchange. There's probably a spoked wheel/disc brake front end that's almost a straight swap. Either that or I'd be looking at GS500e stuff.

Thanks Ken! When I started this, I really didn't know that much about bikes. Still don't. I learn new stuff every day. It's all part of the allure. I'd had a three cylinder Kawasaki smoker back in the early 70s, but I bought it new. So, this has definitely been a learning experience. Someone earlier in the thread said I bought the wrong bike. I reckon from a parts availability stand point, they were correct. I just wanted a small to medium twin. This one just seemed to have some odd-ball stuff on it. So, I've had to use the same "outside the sphere of influence" approach I've used with my VW drag racer. When something isn't available, you simply adapt or start with a clean slate.

Now there were a few here that were very critical, and I can see their point...to a point. Many newcomers are in way over their head, and I reckon it was assumed I was too. This bike may not be everyone's "cup of tea", but it has served a purpose. For an "around town" scooter, it does quite nicely, and I'll refine it over time. Using what I've learned here and other places, I'll apply to the next project.

As far as front ends for this bike, I did find a comprehensive interchange list of what's easily swappable, and the GS500/550 stuff will work. But, with a little work, virtually ANYTHING is do-able!

Thanks again for the compliments!

I know it’s been 11 years but surf for gs300s brought me here. I’m 79, a lifelong rider and mechanic with 65-70 bikes in my history. In junior high I knew of the gps and iom when no one else had a clue it seemed. I haven’t done a cafe in about 15 years. The last 2 were an ‘83 silver wing 650 and ‘89 Vulcan 750. My buddy runs a one man bike repair and has had one sitting in his shop for over a decade. I was hunting a 305 Kawi but folks think they’re gold. Your story is perfect for helping my project. Thank you, guzzijohn-Champlin,mn:geek:

First thing you should do here is start your own thread preferably with pictures (y) you're going to find regular folks here are into function and performance machines, real cafe racer type rides, not a lot of support here for the wrong kind of old bone cheap bikes morphed into open wheel cafe choppers.

As usual my putor savvy is like my latest wrench abilities. I wrote a reply but it disappeared. I’ll come back when that bike is in my hands.
