As a guide to making the air box frame, which you cant see under the foam, I checked out the spacing of the stock air box which has the filter element fairly close to the intake of the carbs. I think I actually gave the inlets more space. For the next attempt I am thinking of using some Mikuni 50mm velocity stacks that will clamp onto the carb inlets and possibly improve the column of air going into the carbs.
 
Just stumbled upon this thread as I'm looking to tackle a similar project. I have a 98 trident and a 98 t-bird (std) donor. Came here looking for advice and pointers when approaching the undertaking. Thanks in advance
