i wanna hijack this a bit as i have a 550 and debating swap.

what do you guys think about going an inch shorter w/ one of the earlier cb750 arms(the pressed tubing ones)? too wobbly or just right? are these any worse flexibility wise than the stock 550 arm. these things are cheap, $50 or so and they bolt right in i believe. not 100% sure on the pivot bolt diameter but the width is the same.

i had thought about a 1100f one but i don't want to deal w/ shortening it. anyone rode a 550 w/ a longer swingarm? the boxed ones look cool but if it funks up the handling then no thanks.

i'm mostly gonna be riding on the street but i'd like to go to the track eventually though I'm sure it will be a while before my skills catch up w/ the limits of the bike.

going for a shorter swing arm on CB550 is a BAD IDEA
It really needs to be about 2" longer
If you modify the motor so bike is faster, you get a real scary tank slapper around 115~117mph (but it goes away about 120+)
You can over brake back to 90 (ish) so it isn't such an issue slowing down
If you have a slight uphill or headwind, could be real dangerous if you can't get through the 115 problem (or, you could just ride slower ;))

hmm so maybe the 1100f swing arm wouldn't be bad after all?

i can pick one up for $140 right now...may do that then ride the stock arm for a while then switch over and see if i like the difference.

shouldn't be a problem selling i don't think if i don't like. Also have seen a few people actually extend the axle slots forward an inch or so to regain wheelbase on cbx's.

Measure 50 times, and get a machinist to do the rest. Like PJ said. You do not want to go shorter from stock size. I would try to to get it to stock, but having a few inches more won't kill you, only your slow speed turn in. She will feel more stable in the higher speed stuff. The cb750K swingarm like the cb500/550 arm, is shit. I could put my hands on either end and compress the thing with little effort.

Make sure you get correct shocks for the adjustment. You want your axle below the line of your pivot point, but that's being very rough. You want to see everything you will be changing and to make it better. Not worse.

Cool cool. i guess the shocks are the only hitch if i decide to ride stock for a while..i'm buying new shocks regardless so if went stock and then switched to the 1100f later i'd need to buy shocks twice i guess since the mounts are further back.

def hear you on the machinist. i've got a shop a few blocks from me that's been doing some stuff for me... so will take it to him for any work i need.

here's a question though...i'm assuming I would reuse those end caps from 550 arm on the pivot w/ the 1100f swingarm?

I just recently put an older ex500 swingarm on my 550 four. Just needs like a ~16 mm spacer and the chain line lines ups and the pivot bolt is the same size so you can just use the stock cb bolt.
